How Being On Broadway Is Helping Kandi Burruss Amid Her Divorce

Former “Real Housewives of Atlanta” star Kandi Burruss made her grand return to the Broadway stage on December 11 in the hit musical “& Juliet,” and according to her, the timing couldn’t be more “perfect.” In a new interview, the reality star and Grammy-award-winning songwriter opened up about putting herself out there again amid her ongoing divorce from her soon-to-be ex-husband, Todd Tucker. While the singer has faced a whirlwind of personal drama recently, she admits that the stage is exactly where she needs to be right now.

Speaking with PEOPLE, Burruss confessed the timing of her return to Broadway was “f-cking perfect.”

According to the mother of three, a lot is swirling around her at the moment, but it “feels good” to focus on what makes her happy.

“This show is so much fun that no matter what’s happening, it just takes you out of that space,” she said.

Burruss will perform eight shows a week in “& Juliet” until early March 2026; however, this was not the “Real Housewives” star’s first time on the legendary stage.

In 2018, Burruss starred as Mama Morton in “Chicago,” following in the footsteps of her “Atlanta” co-star, NeNe Leakes.

For this time around, Burruss admitted she was a bit apprehensive about getting back in front of an audience.

“At first, I was a little nervous, I’m not going to lie,” she said. “I have not performed on Broadway in eight years, since Chicago. That’s a long time! And yeah, I toured with Xscape, and have done acting roles, but of course, I want to be on point, I want to be right! But I feel strong about it. I feel good. I feel ready to go.”

In the musical, the cast sings songs written by the famed music producer Max Martin, who has worked with artists such as Ariana Grande, Britney Spears, NSYNC, and Pink.

And speaking of Pink, Burruss sings one of her songs, “F-ckin Perfect,” in the musical, and after some time, realized the song hits closer to home than she thought.

A clip of her performing the song on “The View” sparked a frenzy among watchers. In the performance, she sings, “Pretty, pretty please, don’t you ever, ever feel / Like you’re less than f-ckin’ perfect / Pretty, pretty please, if you ever, ever feel like you’re nothing / You’re f-ckin’ perfect to me.”

According to Burruss, the 2010 single means more to her for a specific reason. “I’m always in my head, doubting myself — even though I guess it may look to other people like I never have doubts. But people just see the shiny part of the coin, right?” she said.

“You don’t see the other side where it’s kind of dull. It’s kind of like, ‘Oh my God, I don’t know if this is what I’m supposed to be doing?’ So I’m really hearing those words now,” she added.

Weeks before starting her Broadway stint, the “No Scrubs” writer revealed she was divorcing her husband, Tucker, whom she’d been married to for 11 years.

“I’m stepping into a new chapter pouring into my work, my family, and my own growth. I’m grateful to everyone who supported us throughout the years, and I ask for privacy, grace, and understanding as we navigate this transition with our family,” she said.

On her podcast, Burruss got even more vulnerable about the split, admitting to experiencing a wave of emotions. Sometimes you’re cool, you’re moving, you’re mixing, you’re moving, you’re hanging out with friends,” she said before noting that other days aren’t as easy. “So all the times you’ve been seeing me online [all smiles] means nothing. I’ve been going through it, child. I’ve been going through it. Life has been life-ing me.”
