Joel Embiid’s career is far from a ‘what if’ story

Another year, another devastating injury for Joel Embiid.

Due to lingering effects of a left-knee injury, the Sixers star will miss the remainder of the 2024-25 season.

The Sixers deemed it best to shut down the former NBA MVP after consulting several doctors about his ongoing knee issues.

“After further evaluation, it has been determined that he is medically unable to play and will miss the remainder of the season to focus on treatment and rehabilitation,” the Sixers said in a statement. “…The team and specialists will continue working with Joel to ensure the best path forward for his long-term health and performance.”

Sixers fans are all too familiar with such troubling news. Notably, Embiid has missed more games than he’s played in the last two seasons. Over his nine-year career, Embiid has missed 400-plus games.

Shortly after the Sixers announced Embiid would be sidelined for the rest of the season, many social media users began classifying him as the league’s latest “what if” player. Similarly to Brandon Roy, Greg Oden and Penny Hardaway, many claimed that recurring injuries have washed away Embiid’s potential.

As unfortunate as it is to see such a generational talent hindered by injury, the change in stance on Embiid’s career outlook is hyperbolic.

Sure, it’s fair to wonder what type of career numbers he’d have if not for his 400-plus games missed. It’s also fair to ponder how injuries have altered Embiid and the Sixers’ playoff results.

However, Embiid is far from a “what if” story.

Even if the Sixers star never plays another game, Embiid is one of the most talented, accomplished players in league history.

Through nine seasons, Embiid has compiled seven All-Star appearances, five All-NBA selections, two scoring titles and NBA MVP (2022-23) honors.

Add in his Olympic Gold medal and three All-Defensive team selections, and its arguable that Embiid boasts the most impressive resume in Sixers history.
