Matthew McConaughey Shares Unconventional Marriage Tip: Ditch The King-Size Bed

In his latest book, “Poems & Prayers,” Matthew McConaughey revealed a simple but meaningful secret to nurturing a lasting marriage.

Drawing from his own life with wife Camila Alves, whom he’s been married to for 13 years, the Academy Award winner revealed an unconventional marriage tip: forget the king-size mattress.

“The Dallas Buyers Club” star explained: “The best thing you can / do for your / marriage. One way to surely / get ahead, / is get rid of that / king-size mattress, / and sleep in a / queen-size bed.”

Speaking with Fox News Digital, McConaughey recalled visiting friends who had massive double-king beds, where the kids sprawled out between their parents.

“We have kids and we go to our friend’s house and he has one of these double king-size beds put together and all the kids sleep in the bed,” he said. “The wife’s on one side with her side table, and the husband’s on the other side, and it’s great when you got all three kids, but all of a sudden the kids get too big. They’re out of the bed.”

Back at home, McConaughey shared that he began noticing the same thing.

“I wake up one morning … I’m looking over there and Camilla’s like a football field away, man. Then you go to bed at night, like you want to snuggle up and … ‘Well, we’ve got to cover you up. Come about 12 feet and I’ll come 12 feet,” he joked.

The actor added, “You’re like, man, this damn king-size bed is not good for the marriage, man. Get rid of that son of a b-tch. So we got a queen-size where we’re shoulder to shoulder. I’m telling you, it’s good for your marriage.”

The “Dazed and Confused” actor added that with a queen-size bed, there’s no extra space for children to climb in, leaving the bed just for him and Alves.

Conaughey’s new book touches on universal themes such as love, faith, doubt, compassion, and forgiveness.

“Poems & Prayers” blends reflections drawn from biblical proverbs and the Old Testament with personal affirmations and heartfelt intentions.

For McConaughey, keeping his family bonds strong as both a father of three and a husband to Alves remains a top priority.

After tying the knot in 2012, the couple relocated from California to Texas, where they’ve been raising their children: Levi, Vida, and Livingston.

He’s candid about the balance between parenting and partnership, admitting he works on carving out time for his marriage.

“You’ve got kids, so you don’t… you’re spending as much time being a good mother and father of them, but you also gotta make sure – and I can do a better job of this – of going, ‘No, this is our time.’ You can’t 100% live with the kids as a parent,” he explained.

The actor added: “You gotta make [sure] to remember that one of the best examples you can give the kids of how to treat a woman or a man or how to [treat] someone they end up falling in love with down the line is how you treat their mother and how the mother treats the father.”

Away from his personal life, McConaughey’s acting career continues to thrive.

According to Variety, Netflix has secured rights to a new series that will pair him with “Yellowstone” star Cole Hauser.

The project, from “True Detective” creator Nic Pizzolatto, is still finalizing contracts but is set to feature the two actors as brothers.

Beyond that, McConaughey is also attached to star in a film adaptation of Mickey Spillane and Max Allan Collins’ “Mike Hammer” novels, with Pizzolatto penning the screenplay.
