Mavericks make big decision about Jason Kidd’s future in Dallas

Pursued by other NBA teams recently, Dallas Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd isn’t leaving the Lone Star State any time soon.

On Tuesday, the Mavericks reportedly inked Kidd to a long-term extension, keeping the coach in Dallas and away from any potential suitors. Kidd has drawn interest from the Los Angeles Lakers and New York Knicks in the past, with Dallas rebuffing the Knicks this offseason before the franchise went on to sign Mike Brown to fill its coaching vacancy.

Kidd has a 179-149 record during his four years overseeing the Mavericks and has guided the franchise to the 2022 Western Conference Finals and 2024 NBA Finals.

Terms of the extension were not immediately disclosed. News of the extension broke on Tuesday afternoon before the Mavericks were scheduled to face the Lakers in Las Vegas in what will be the team’s final preseason game.

NBA reporter Marc Stein, who broke the extension news, also reported that the Mavericks were committed to extending Kidd before the season began. Dallas kicks off the 2025-26 NBA season at home against the San Antonio Spurs on October 22.

This is the second contract extension for Kidd, and both extensions have come after he has been pursued by other NBA teams. In the offseason before the 2023-24 campaign, Kidd drew interest from the Lakers but returned to Dallas. Now, with the recent interest coming from the other coast and the Knicks, the Mavericks have once again ensured Kidd will be on their bench.

This will mark Kidd’s 10th season as an NBA head coach, and he has compiled a 362–339 record during that time overseeing the Mavericks, Milwaukee Bucks and Brooklyn Nets.

Dallas finished 39-43 last season but earned the top overall pick in the 2025 NBA draft, landing Cooper Flagg to be a young centerpiece for the franchise moving forward.
