Miley Cyrus is finally revealing the terrifying health experience that nearly forced her to walk away from music for good.

The pop superstar, known for her electric performances and raw honesty, shared that she was hit with a medical scare so intense it made her consider ending her career entirely.

While fans may have seen her light up the stage on New Year’s Eve, things weren’t nearly as glamorous behind the scenes.

Miley Cyrus Struggled With Terrifying Health Issue During NYE Special

During a recent interview, Cyrus opened up about the frightening moment that occurred right before her 2023 live NBC New Year’s Eve special with Dolly Parton.

“I had a pretty traumatic experience on a show that I was doing with Lorne [Michaels] when I was doing my New Year’s show,” the singer said per Page Six on Wednesday’s episode of “The Zane Lowe Show.”

The “Wrecking Ball” hitmaker recalled co-hosting the “Miley’s New Year’s Eve Party” despite struggling with pain from a ruptured ovarian cyst.

“I had a medical emergency. I had an ovarian cyst rupture. We didn’t know exactly what was going on, so we did it. It was pretty traumatic because it was extremely excruciating and I did the show anyway. But it was really, really hard on me,” she said.

Cyrus Thought About Giving Up On Music

Miley Cyrus revealed the health scare was so terrible that it caused her to consider quitting her music career.

However, all it took to get her head back in the game was a conversation with film producer and television writer Lorne Michaels.

“I had dinner with Lorne and he said something that now has stuck with me. He goes, ‘Six months. Everybody has six months to feel sorry for themselves and then we start to rebuild,’” the 32-year-old shared.

Cyrus continued, noting that Michaels said she wasn’t the first artist to sit in his chair and tell him they were quitting music. “Everyone does this, everyone has these traumatic experiences,” she recalled the icon’s words.

Thankfully, the singer listened and focused on getting back to making good music.

The Reason Behind Miley Cyrus’s Unique Voice Revealed

Elsewhere in the interview, Cyrus explained the reason for her distinctive low-pitched voice. The singer revealed it was partly due to a growth in her vocal cords.

“So I have this very large polyp on my vocal cord, which has given me a lot of the tone and the texture that has made me who I am, but it’s extremely difficult to perform with because it’s like running a marathon with ankle weights on,” she said.

She continued, “So even when I’m talking sometimes, at the end of the day I’ll call my mom and she’ll go, ‘Oh, you sound like you’re talking through a radio.’ And that’s how you know I’m really tired because it creates that ultimate vocal fry.”

The Grammy Award winner also shared that she had Reinke’s edema, a condition that causes swelling of the vocal folds due to fluid buildup.

However, even though the condition meant she found it “extremely difficult” to perform, Cyrus said she didn’t want to have surgery for fear of sounding different.

    Cyrus Lied To Dolly Parton

Cyrus’s chat on “The Zane Lowe Show” didn’t only feature sad details about her health.

The singer also recounted how a lie she told her godmother, Dolly Parton, two Christmases ago, motivated the writing of two new songs set to be part of her upcoming album.

“She goes, ‘Alright, I see what you’re doing. Got any hits?’” she recalled Parton asking her. “And I’m like, ‘I do actually.’ She goes, ‘Oh really? What’s it called?’” Cyrus said.

The songwriter then named a new song, “More to Lose,” which she hadn’t even written.

Considering she had given Parton a deadline to send the song over, Cyrus said she called her songwriting partner, and they got to work immediately.

Thankfully, by early January, Cyrus had written and sent the song to the 79-year-old.

    Miley Cyrus Told Another Lie

After playing the song for Parton, Cyrus said she was forced to tell another lie when the “Jolene” singer asked, “Got any more?”

“I was like, ‘I do actually, and I think you’re really going to like the title.’ And meanwhile I’m going, ‘What titles do I have in my head?’ And I’m like, ‘I’ve got a song called ‘Every Girl You’ve Ever Loved,’ and you’re going to love that,” Cyrus said.

Like the previous time, the “Flowers” crooner told Parton she was working on it. However, all Cyrus had was the title.

Nevertheless, she got to work, and now both songs will be part of her new album, “Something Beautiful,” set for release on May 30.
