Thanks to Danny Westneat’s succinct appraisal of the recent poll showing that most citizens throughout Washington state favor an income tax on the super wealthy. Our state is home to a multitude of billionaires and others whose opulence is staggering.
Common folks of myriad political views are growing in awareness of how wealth disparity poses a grave danger to not only quotidian demands of life — like the cost of rent, child and health care, groceries and transportation — but to the very fabric of democracy itself.
At a time when in our nation we may soon witness the unsettling arrival of the first trillionaire, it is imperative that our Legislature impose a specific tax on members of our state’s oligarchy. We can rest assured that the comfortable lifestyles of the financial elite will not be unduly hampered.
