U.S. Representative Elise Stefanik (R-NY) has announced she is “strongly considering” running for governor of New York in 2026.

Stefanik, who has represented New York’s 21st congressional district since 2015 and serves as chair of the House Republican Conference, made the announcement during an interview with Mark Levin, signaling her intent to challenge the Democrat-dominated political machine that has long controlled New York.

    Stefanik:
“I am strongly considering running for governor of New York State. I’m a born-and-bred New Yorker. I’m proud to be the highest-ranking New York Republican who has really led the charge in holding New York elected Democrats accountable for their failures.

Whether it’s the economic crisis in New York — the highest-tax state in the nation, the most unfriendly to small businesses — you’re seeing a mass exodus of people who have been run out of the state because of Kathy Hochul’s failed policies.

On top of that, you’re seeing a criminals-first, illegals-first agenda fueled by Kathy Hochul, whether it’s our failed bail reform or whether it’s sanctuary cities. We need a governor that supports law enforcement, that supports the rule of law, and, frankly, common sense.

Then, of course, you see a corruption crisis in New York State — whether it’s New York Democrat governor after governor or Tish James. She is rightfully being prosecuted by the Department of Justice for her alleged mortgage fraud.

It is ripe for new leadership in New York. I’m overwhelmed by the positive support, but we’re taking a strong look at it. More to come.”

Speaking at an event in Ticonderoga, Stefanik criticized Hochul’s leadership, citing issues such as high taxes, crime, and an affordability crisis driving residents out of the state.

“There is an affordability crisis in New York State,” Stefanik said. “If you look at utility rates, insurance rates, it is running families and small businesses out of this state. We lead the nation in population exodus. That should not be the case.”

Stefanik emphasized the need for “a new generation leader to step up and bring common sense and deliver results.”

“The issues that I hear from, not just in my district, but all across the state, people are struggling,” she added.

According to the New York Post, Stefanik boasts a formidable campaign war chest, with over $10 million in federal funds that could be redirected to a statewide race.

Recent polling indicates a competitive race, with Hochul leading Stefanik by just six points (46% to 40%).

Governor Hochul has responded to Stefanik’s potential challenge with confidence.

“I look forward to that fight. No matter who it is. It’s not settled yet, but I say bring it on,” Hochul told CNN.

Stefanik’s decision to consider a gubernatorial run follows the withdrawal of her nomination for U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, a move made by President Trump to maintain the Republican majority in the House.
