Sanctuary law: One crime is one crime too many

Re: “Ferguson says he won’t be ‘bullied’ by Trump threats over sanctuary law” (Aug. 19, Local News):

Gov. Bob Ferguson’s main responsibility is keeping Washington citizens safe. Are we safe in a sanctuary state where migrants and criminals who entered the country illegally are allowed to settle?

On Aug. 5, the Department of Justice published a list of states, cities and counties it identified as sanctuary jurisdictions, including Washington state and Seattle. According to the Heritage Foundation, crime (murder, rape, assault against children and others) committed by immigrants in the United States illegally is widespread.

Gov. Ferguson is not being bullied by U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi, and she is not asking anyone to “bend the knee.” Americans are being severely harmed, and Ferguson refuses to support a Trump administration policy for the good of all Washingtonians. There are state and local police and sheriffs who are squarely behind President Donald Trump. Mayor Burce Harrell has said that Seattle is “a welcoming city for all” — criminals too?

These officials need to grow up and get over their “Trump derangement syndrome.” And it doesn’t matter that immigrants commit crime at a lower rate than those who are native born. They are here illegally and one crime against our citizens is one too many. Sanctuary jurisdictions need to end.

    Craig A. Chilton, Bonney Lake
