Sean Penn made a low-key appearance this week at celebrity hotspot Nobu in Malibu, where he was spotted dining with his daughter Dylan Penn.

The “Mystic River” star kept it casual for the evening outing in khaki trousers, a white shirt layered under a dark green jacket, and white sneakers.

But it was Sean Penn’s overall appearance that turned heads.

Sean Penn’s Rugged Look Turns Heads

Penn was pictured walking outside with a noticeably disheveled appearance. He was wearing a dark olive-green jacket over a gray t-shirt and casual, slightly rumpled pants. His hair appeared to be tousled and unkempt, as he sported a light beard, adding to the rugged look. His expression is neutral to slightly serious as he looks off to the side.

Dylan, whose mother is Penn’s ex-wife Robin Wright, was seen in a sheer black maxi skirt paired with a black leather jacket and sneakers. She completed her look with a chic bun and a black Yves Saint Laurent bag.

The pair later left together in the same vehicle, with Dylan behind the wheel.

Daily Mail was the first to obtain the photos of Penn.

Penn shares Dylan and son Hopper with Wright, whom he was married to from 1996 to 2010.

He was previously married to Madonna (1985–1989) and most recently to actress Leila George from 2020 to 2022. As of late, the actor has been romantically linked to 30-year-old Valeria Nicov. The couple made their red carpet debut last November at the Marrakech International Film Festival.

While Penn appeared relaxed during his Malibu outing, he’s been making headlines for comments about his past work, particularly his portrayal of Harvey Milk in the acclaimed 2008 film “Milk,” which earned him his second Best Actor Oscar.

“Look, I’m totally on board with any industry, every industry, the movie business as well, confronting the problem of what had been minimal diversity,” he said. “There’s nobody of any gender or any race or any alternate lifestyle that I’m not interested in if they have a story in their heart they want to tell.”

Penn pushed back against the notion that only LGBTQ+ actors should portray LGBTQ+ characters, using his “Milk” role as an example:

“What I know is that the solution is not limiting the casting of Hamlet to Danish princes. And not only is it an attack on imagination that is our bread and butter, but [it] is a demonstration of the unimaginative who would ask it. And I find it culturally offensive and venal and sad that that’s the easy solution for people to have groupthink on and all those defenses. I’ll just pick one movie out of the air when it comes to, you know, more Black actors working. Thank God the fight is in them when you see something like Straight Outta Compton. Great movie, great performances.”

Reflecting on his performance as “Milk,” Penn added, “I feel so lucky I got to play Harvey Milk, because guess what, for me as an actor that wasn’t a gay man or a straight man, that was a different personality, and that’s what we’re supposed to be able to do.”

He concluded, “I don’t know the solution. I don’t know where it’ll go, but I would not be allowed to play that role today. That’s certain.”

Several Other Actors Have Earned Critical Acclaim For Portraying LGBTQ+ Characters

Penn is among several actors who, despite not publicly identifying as LGBTQ+, have earned critical acclaim for portraying LGBTQ+ characters.

Others include Charlize Theron in “Monster” (2003), Benedict Cumberbatch in “The Imitation Game” (2014), Cate Blanchett in “Carol” (2015), Timothée Chalamet in “Call Me by Your Name” (2017), and Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger in “Brokeback Mountain” (2005).

As Penn continues to make rare public appearances and reflect on his career, it’s clear he remains deeply engaged in the conversations shaping Hollywood’s future, even if it means wading into controversy.
