Re: “A river returns” (Sept. 21, Opinion):
Sunday’s Opinion section article gives Amy Bowers Cordalis, a member of the Yurok Tribe, a well-deserved shoutout for her successful fight to take down four dams on the Klamath River, restoring the ability of salmon to migrate 400 miles from the Pacific Ocean to spawn in newly opened habitat. Readers can look forward to reading her book, “The Water Remembers,” when it appears next month.
Earthjustice, America’s largest environmental nonprofit law firm, represented the Yurok Tribe and commercial fishers between 2001-2024 in the litigation that led to removing the dams and saving the salmon runs on the Klamath. Earthjustice represents plaintiffs in a similar lawsuit seeking to remove salmon-killing dams on the Snake River and restore salmon runs in the Columbia River.
The success of the Klamath River litigation tells us that breaching the Snake River dams can restore salmon runs in the Columbia River basin as well. Politicians, please note.
