The ‘A.L. wins leaders since 2000’ quiz

Since pitcher CC Sabathia retired in 2019, no New York Yankee has worn his No. 52. Now, officially, nobody ever will again. The Yankees announced they are retiring his number in a September ceremony this season one year after his induction into the Pro Baseball Hall of Fame.

Sabathia made his major league debut with Cleveland in 2001 and would win his lone Cy Young award in his final full season there in 2007. He was dealt to the Brewers at the 2008 trade deadline, where he put together a legendary run to help get Milwaukee to the playoffs before signing a seven-year, $161 million contract with the Yankees as a free agent for 2009 and beyond.

In 11 seasons with the Yankees, Sabathia won a World Series as the ace of the staff in 2009 and racked up 134 total wins and 1,700 strikeouts in 306 starts. His 97 playoff Ks are fifth-most in Yankee history, sandwiched between Whitey Ford’s 94 and Roger Clemens’ 99.

Which brings us to today’s quiz. While wins for starting pitchers have diminished in importance as a statistic with small pitch counts and shorter leashes for many starters, the Yankees were happy to have him lead all of baseball in the category in 2009 and 2010. With that being said, can you name the pitchers to lead the American League in wins for each season since 2000?

    Good luck!
