There was no legal basis to justify the Civil War for never did Lincoln advocate the termination of slavery. That issue was only to confine it from spreading to other states. The entire issue and battle cry was to preserve the Union. But the Supreme Court, after the fact, to justify the war, held that no state had the right to secede enshrining the very same tyranny that the American Revolution was all about.
