IN THE NEWS: In a scenario worthy of Kafka, federal agents snatched Kilmar Abrego Garcia off the streets in Maryland and, without a trial, quickly whisked him away to a prison in El Salvador. Now the government says Garcia was taken by mistake, but there is nothing it can do to retrieve him.

At 16, Garcia fled his home country, El Salvador, to escape the criminal gang that had been terrorizing his family. He was in the United States legally, had a steady job working construction and a wife and three children. Legalities and personal circumstances do not seem to matter, however – not unless a federal court can cajole the Trump administration into following a ruling that Garcia must be brought back.

And now President Donald Trump is talking about giving the same treatment to “homegrowns” – otherwise known as citizens, like you and me.
