It’s been known that a sequel to the 1990 NASCAR-centric film “Days of Thunder” was in the works, but Tom Cruise and Anne Hathaway confirmed a general release date for the film in a social media post on Saturday.
In a video filmed at Daytona International Speedway, the site of Saturday’s Cup Series race (7:30 p.m. ET, NBC) Hathaway and Cruise posed in front of a Next-Gen car bearing a green and yellow Days of Thunder-themed paint scheme.
“We’re coming out summer of 2028,” Cruise said. “Don’t be late.”

Released as NASCAR began to boom at the start of the 1990s, “Days of Thunder” centers around Cruise, who plays a young driver — Cole Trickle, who is new to the stock car racing scene. Along with crew chief Harry Hogge, played by the late Robert Duvall, Trickle navigates rivalries with Rowdy Burns and Russ Wheeler, recovers from an injury suffered in a harrowing crash at Daytona and eventually returns to Daytona to win the Daytona 500.
