I am surely not the first to note that President Donald Trump’s demolition of the East Wing of the White House is a perfect metaphor for what the Red State president is doing to the United States government and our democracy.
He kicked off his scheme to build a palatial ballroom on the White House grounds with assurances that the established complex of buildings would not be touched. Then he once again proved himself to be a big-time liar by sending in demolition workers to tear down the entire East Wing before anyone could stop him, in the same way he sent the DOGE wrecking crew to blow up much of the federal government.
Trump’s action was in defiance of the National Historic Preservation Act, a law that requires study and consultation before any major renovation of a structure important to America’s heritage is undertaken. But, as he has done repeatedly since the start of his second term, Trump ignored that act of Congress. He has shown that neither laws nor other branches of government nor tradition, honor and good taste will impede him. Trump’s sense of absolute entitlement overrides everything as he pursues his egocentric desires.
The East Wing of the White is gone, just like that, before we could catch our breaths and raise an impotent objection. What, one wonders, will Trump steal from us next ?
