Dee Dee Blanchard convinced everyone around her that her daughter, Gypsy Rose Blanchard, suffered from a long list of severe medical conditions, including leukemia, muscular dystrophy, epilepsy, and developmental delays, portraying her daughter as gravely ill.

As a result, Gypsy was subjected to countless unnecessary medical treatments and surgeries, including the removal of her teeth and salivary glands. Dee Dee also confined Gypsy to a wheelchair, claiming she was unable to walk, and inserted a feeding tube to address fabricated nutritional needs. Isolated from her extended family and the outside world, her life was entirely controlled by her mother, who meticulously dictated her every move.

Throughout her childhood and teenage years, Gypsy Rose Blanchard reportedly made multiple attempts to escape, but Dee Dee Blanchard, maintained tight control through lies, manipulation, and medical abuse to keep her entirely dependent.

“I went to the bathroom, sat on the floor and covered my ears. Except I heard. I heard everything,” she recalled in her book. “Nick entered the room soundlessly because there was no bedroom door, so when she finally woke up it must have been because he was standing over her, not because of any noise. She was startled.”

“I just heard the screaming,” Gypsy added. “And then I lay in the fetal position with my hands pressed hard over my ears. But I could still hear things.”

According to arrest records, Dee Dee Blanchard was stabbed 17 times in the back while she slept. The records further reveal that after the attack in Gypsy’s room, Gypsy and Nicholas Godejohn stole over $4,400 from the house. The pair then checked into a motel to plan their next steps.

In the epilogue of her new book, “My Time To Stand,” Gypsy speculates that her mother might forgive her for her actions, partly because of a poignant coincidence: the ninth anniversary of Dee Dee’s death happened to fall on the same day Gypsy received the first sonogram of the baby she is expecting with her boyfriend, Ken Urker.

“I like to think that my mother is telling me that she wants me to move on with my life, that she forgives me,” Gypsy shared. “And what I will do on this anniversary is her way of helping me change the way I think of myself every June 10. Maybe now, with my freedom, we can both be released from our purgatories. Maybe now she can be free too. She always said we were two sides of the same penny.”

As The Blast reported, Gypsy Rose Blanchard and her fiancé Ken announced they are expecting their first child together, just weeks after she filed for divorce from Ryan Anderson. Despite her tumultuous past, Gypsy has expressed that she is ready to embrace motherhood.

“I understand that with my past, there’s gonna be a lot of people that kind of question if I even should be a mother or even have children in my care,” Gypsy said on ABC when announcing her pregnancy. “I know that I’m not perfect. I know that I have made mistakes in the past.”

She added, “And I will probably make minor mistakes going forward, but at the same time, I do know right from wrong, and learning from past mistakes is a growth that comes with time.”

Gypsy Rose Does Have One Real Ailment

Gypsy revealed that while most of her mother’s claims about her health were fabricated, one was actually true. She believes Dee Dee used this single abnormality as a “smoking gun” to justify the numerous unnecessary medical treatments she imposed on her.

“I actually do have what’s known as a microdeletion, 1q21.1, which is a chromosomal change in which a small piece of chromosome 1 is deleted in each cell,” she wrote in her book. “This microdeletion is known to ‘increase the risk of delayed development, intellectual disability, physical abnormalities, and neurological and psychiatric problems.’ Wow. What a coincidence.”

Gypsy added, “Every illness my mother claimed I had had fallen beneath all of these umbrellas. Except I didn’t actually have a single one of them.”

However, Gypsy later discovered that the microdeletion test, which revealed the one legitimate abnormality, didn’t take place until two decades after she had already endured a host of fabricated illnesses.

“Either my mother knew I had this condition before the 2012 test, researched the potential outcomes, and ran with them … or, this one time, the disorder she claimed for me turned out to be real (though without real symptoms),” she explained. “This was a rabbit hole my brain went down and I still can’t climb out of. Different scenarios keep me up at night.”

“My Time To Stand” is out now.
