It appears guard Hailey Van Lith’s tenure with the Chicago Sky will be short.
The team announced Monday it waived 2025 first-round pick Van Lith. It thanked and wished her well in a post on X.
Why did the Sky waive Hailey Van Lith, and what’s next?
ESPN’s Kendra Andrews reported the Sky waived Van Lith because of the coaching staff’s “style-of-play preference.” Chicago may be looking for more playmaking after finishing 10th in the league in assists last season (19.3 assists per game). Note: The WNBA had 13 teams last season before expanding to 15 during the offseason.
Van Lith, who played the most games (172) in NCAA Division I women’s basketball history, struggled for playing time during her rookie season. The former TCU Horned Frogs star battled an ankle issue but played 29 games, averaging 12.4 minutes and 3.5 points per game on 33.9 percent shooting from the field.
