Travis Hunter facing one big question ahead of NFL Draft

Travis Hunter is widely expected to be one of the top players selected in the 2025 NFL Draft, but a big question about the former Colorado star still has not been answered: What position will he play?

The answer depends upon which team drafts Hunter. At Colorado, Hunter was a star wide receiver and defensive back. He excelled at both positions, which led to him winning the Heisman Trophy last season. For a while, it seemed like Hunter was on a clear path to becoming a cornerback in the NFL. That looks a lot less certain now.

In the latest ESPN draft buzz column published on Friday, analyst Matt Miller said whether Hunter is viewed as a cornerback or wide receiver “varies by team.” Reporter Field Yates added that the teams he has spoken with believe Hunter has a higher ceiling as a receiver.

Hunter has said he wants to play offense and defense in the NFL. Even if he receives a limited number of two-way snaps, it is improbable that a team would allow him to be a full-time player on both sides of the ball.

The New England Patriots, who have the No. 4 overall pick, are one team that could draft Hunter. They already have two solid starting cornerbacks, Christian Gonzalez and a new free-agent addition, Carlton Davis. The Patriots also recently signed Stefon Diggs, but they still need wide receiver help. Head coach Mike Vrabel recently shared his thoughts on Hunter potentially being a two-way player in the NFL.

Hunter had 96 catches for 1,258 yards and 15 touchdowns at Colorado last season. He had 35 total tackles, four interceptions and a forced fumble defensively. It would not be a surprise to see him succeed at either position in the NFL, which is why he is viewed as such a rare prospect. (H/T Bleacher Report)
