Re: “Electric vehicles died a century ago. Could that happen again?” (June 2, Business):
I enjoyed the article about Jay Leno’s 1909 Baker Electric very much. I particularly noted the comment, “Most people alive today have never seen one.” Well, I have.
I am 86 years old and as a very young girl I remember an electric vehicle being driven around the streets of Bloomsburg, Pa. It was owned by two sisters, the daughters of the owner of the local silk mill. It looked like a telephone booth on wheels and had a tiller-like contraption for steering instead of a steering wheel. It was very tall for, as was mentioned in the article, there had to be room for their hats. I thought it was very exciting because they looked so comfortable and drove around sitting straight and tall and with great confidence.
Thanks for the memories and thanks to Jay Leno for preserving them.
