Actor Adam Driver is finally breaking his silence on the “Girls” reboot. Although he appeared in all six seasons of the HBO comedy series, mostly as the on-again, off-again boyfriend of Lena Dunham’s character, it seems that the two had a falling out after the showrunner released her memoir “Famesick” earlier this year. In the tell-all book, Dunham alleged that Driver threw a chair in her direction when she forgot her lines, screamed in her face, and even once punched a hole in the wall of his trailer.
‘Girls’ Is Returning For Five Brand New Episodes
Before Adam Driver was cast as the villainous First Order enforcer Kylo Ren in the “Star Wars” sequel trilogy, Driver’s claim to fame was appearing as Adam Sackler on “Girls.” Although the show is returning for a limited five-episode revival, his character doesn’t seem likely to return, given the falling out he’s seemingly had with showrunner Lena Dunham.
In the initial announcement, it was stated that Allison Williams’ Marnie, Jemima Kirke’s Jessa, Zosia Mamet’s Shoshana, and Andrew Rannells’ Elijah would all return. Many fans hoped Driver would still return in some way, and that his return was being kept as a surprise. Others, however, were skeptical given Dunham’s claims against him. Now Driver has finally broken his silence.
Adam Driver Wishes His Former ‘Girls’ Castmates The ‘Best Of Luck’
While promoting his upcoming crime drama “Paper Tiger,” CinemaBlend asked the Oscar-nominated actor whether he planned to return for the “Girls” reboot. Driver’s response was clear: “Nope, but I wish them the best of luck.”
It remains to be seen how Dunham will handle his character’s exit from the franchise. The last time fans saw the character, he was still dating Jemima Kirke’s Jessa, which impacted her friendship with Hannah, given that Adam and Hannah were involved for most of the series.
Lena Dunham Was Surprised By The Reaction To Adam’s Character
While promoting her memoir “Famesick,” Dunham admitted that Hannah and Adam’s rollercoaster relationship was meant to illustrate a toxic relationship. However, she quickly noticed that fans thought their dynamic was “funny” and “sexy,” which wasn’t what she intended.
“What was also interesting was those dynamics, which were in life scary at times, lonely — those would be recreated on television, and people thought they were funny and fun and at times sexy!” Dunham told The New York Times in April 2026.
“I didn’t write Adam [Driver’s] character to be a romantic hero, and by the end, everyone was like, ‘I want a boyfriend like that. I want a boyfriend who throws two-by-fours and spanks me,’ and that is not what I was going for, but it was certainly a lesson in: What we desire cannot be untangled from what we have been through and what we fear,” she added.
One Of Adam Driver’s Scenes Was Too NSFW, Even For HBO

Some of the cast and creatives of “Girls” did an oral history with The Hollywood Reporter to celebrate the series, which aired its final episode in 2017. During the interview, producer Judd Apatow revealed that the show was supposed to include an intimate scene in which audiences would actually see Driver “finish” on screen. However, HBO would absolutely not let the character’s ejaculation and bodily fluids be shown on camera.
“From the beginning, we were aware that what we were doing was sexually provocative, and that’s what made it interesting and new and fun… But then we had a scene with a conclusion shot,” Apatow said at the time. “And HBO said, ‘If this is in the show, we could lose our license.’ We were like, ‘Oh my God, we’ve actually found the line at HBO.’”
The scene would have happened during an episode in the second season of “Girls,” after Hannah dumps Adam. Although he begins dating a girl named Natalia after meeting her mother at Alcoholics Anonymous, Adam begins to spiral after running into Hannah on the street. After breaking his sobriety, he takes Natalia back to his apartment, where things got a bit rough for Natalia. The scene itself was meant to be extremely uncomfortable, and some publications at the time even likened it to sexual assault.
Lena Dunham Claims She Wrote About Adam Driver In An ‘Honest Way’
Even though some fans have questioned the allegations Dunham made in her tell-all book, Dunham told PEOPLE magazine she wrote about Driver in an “honest” way.
“For better or worse, it was all of our first jobs. I think Adam went on a very specific ride because he had the ride of the show and then also the ride of becoming a major movie star at the same time,” Dunham said, referring to Driver’s rise to fame in the “Star Wars” sequel trilogy.
“And again, the goal was never to make Adam seem like he was in any way the outlier of the show, but just to talk about how complex and confusing those first experiences of trying to be a boss were,” she added.
For his part, Driver has only answered one question about Dunham’s accusations against him at the Cannes premiere of “Paper Tiger” earlier this year. “I have no comment on any of that,” Driver said, as per Deadline. “I’m saving it all for my book.”
The tongue-in-cheek response quickly drew laughter from the crowd.
Adam Driver Is Also Not Returning To ‘Star Wars’
This may not be a great week for Adam Driver fans. Only days before he confirmed that he wasn’t going to appear in the “Girls” reboot, he also revealed that he has no plans to return to “Star Wars” during a recent appearance on The Rich Eisen Show.
“It’s over. No more ‘Star Wars.’ We tried. We tried to do one more. But they were like, ‘No, he’s dead,’” Driver said, adding that “The ship has sailed” on “The Hunt for Ben Solo.” Still, fans have their fingers crossed that the character might still appear in some capacity in a future “Star Wars” project.
Fortunately, Driver is also attached to two major projects. Following his recent roles in “Paper Tiger” and “Misty Green,” Adam Driver is set to work with director Michael Mann again after his starring role in “Ferrari.” Driver will play the villain in the “Heat” sequel, based on the book that Mann co-wrote in 2022.
On the November 6 episode of “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” Driver also revealed why he accepted the role of the villain Mister Sinister in the upcoming “X-Men” reboot, after a long “tradition” of turning down roles in the MCU. The “X-Men” reboot is currently scheduled for a theatrical release on May 5, 2028.
