The NFL’s new league year starts Monday as free agency opens, but moves have already been made left and right ahead of that.
One of those moves sent shockwaves through the league and multiple fan bases on Sunday night.
The Pittsburgh Steelers reportedly are acquiring wide receiver DK Metcalf from the Seattle Seahawks in exchange for a second-round pick and additional pick swaps in the upcoming draft.
Seattle appears to be blowing things up, as it traded quarterback Geno Smith to the Las Vegas Raiders on Friday and released five other players in recent days.
But Pittsburgh, on the other hand, seems to be loading up. Metcalf could be lining up with new teammate George Pickens on either side of … well, that’s the next big question.
Who will quarterback the Steelers in 2025?
The team had both Justin Fields and Russell Wilson under center in 2024, leading to a major split in the fan base (and reportedly in the locker room) over who should take the reins full time.
But with Fields looking like he may have one foot out the door in Western Pennsylvania, the indication would seem that Wilson will reunite with his old Seattle teammate next season.
That being said, other options are available for Pittsburgh to consider, too.
Sam Darnold is set to walk away from the Minnesota Vikings after they declined to franchise-tag him, and Aaron Rodgers, who will part ways with the New York Jets, is courting suitors for his services.
Wilson, too, has garnered interest from teams like the New York Giants, but acquiring Metcalf could be a sign Pittsburgh wants to convince him to stick around.
Whatever the motivation, general manager Omar Khan has a major decision to make and likely only hours left to make it before the NFL QB carousel hits lightspeed.
