Harry Kane’s Ballon D’Or win is surprising but warranted

Bayern Munich and England star  Harry Kane took home the 2026 Ballon D’Or Award in London, England, on Monday.

He’s the first English player to win the award since Michael Owen in 2001 and just the fourth English player to win it since its inception in 1956.

“It was really tough this year, the incredible players I was up against,” Kane said in his victory speech. “I’m almost speechless.”

He wasn’t exaggerating. Kane beat out Kylian Mbappé  (of Real Madrid and France) and Lamine Yamal (of Barcelona and Spain) to take home the award. Both were thought of as clear favorites to win—Mbappé for his bravura performance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Yamal for his impressive statistics at the age of 19—but Kane’s goalscoring record, on-field leadership and unrelenting consistency wound up tipping the vote in his favor.

While English camps rejoiced in the aftermath of Kane’s win, much of the footballing world bemoaned his surprise victory. The argument against him is simple: Kane, as a traditional poaching striker, is a far less ‘entertaining’ player than tricky playmakers like Mbappé and Yamal.

Simple, yes, but utterly reductive. There’s entertainment—and indeed plenty of trickery—in Kane’s traditional game, and he earned this honor fair and square.

    Stats that beggar belief

Kane closed out his 2025/26 Bundesliga season with a frankly ridiculous 36 goals from 25 starts and 31 total appearances. His closest competitor, VfB Stuttgart’s German striker Deniz Undav, scored 19 goals in the same number of starts, and his season-wide performance was considered stellar in its own right.

But Kane didn’t just dominate the Bundesliga: he ran roughshod over the UEFA Champions League, too. His Bayern side exited the competition at the semifinal stage, but Kane still led the competition in goals and assists with a whopping 16 to his name. His Ballon D’Or rival Kylian Mbappé wound up matching that figure, but crucially, Kane’s Bayern eliminated Mbappé’s Real Madrid from the Champions League in the quarterfinals—and it was Kane’s twin goals in the two-legged tie that made it happen.

Kane also captained England at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, leading the Three Lions to a semifinal finish and a victory over Mbappé’s France in perhaps the wildest third-place game in competition history. (England won it 6-4.) Kane scored six goals in the tournament, enough for fourth in the Golden Boot leaderboard, and his leadership kept England competitive in its demanding knockout games against Mexico, Norway and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Crucially, Kane pulled off these feats at the ripe old age of 33. He’s not a player in his prime like Mbappé or a teenager on the rise like Yamal: he’s a seasoned veteran finding new performance spikes against the odds.

    Hard, not easy

Yes, Kane is not an eye-catching creative player like his Ballon D’Or competitors, but he’s something different and altogether more compelling: a hardworking professional reaching new heights through sheer effort.

They say the best athletes make sport look easy, and perhaps that’s true. But there’s something valuable to be said for the athletes who make it look hard by showing the world just how much time, effort and analysis they put into their own development. That’s Kane: a player equally comfortable raising the bar for himself and sharing the vulnerable journey behind his own success.

In many ways, that’s why Kane’s Ballon D’Or victory is so refreshing: because for once, the game’s top prize didn’t go to a player who made everything look easy. It went to the player who made everything look hard—and delivered unbelievable results all the same.
