The Philadelphia Eagles’ nightmare season continued earlier this week when quarterback Jalen Hurts was diagnosed with a superficial blood clot.
He hit the injury report late last week with a calf injury, and now he’ll be out for the foreseeable future as he and the team weigh their options. The Eagles have also been without running back Saquon Barkley and wide receiver DeVonta Smith for multiple games now.
They are catching the injury bug at the worst time, with the team currently sitting at 2-3 and the season teetering on the brink of collapse. But they are forced to roll with the punches and try to improve the roster any way they can to compete until they get their stars back.
With backup Tanner McKee and rookie Cole Payton as the only other QBs on the roster, Philadelphia needs another player for depth. NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported that the team will sign Dallas Cowboys quarterback Joe Milton III from the practice squad.
Milton has wowed fans in the past with his rare arm talent, but he is still a raw player who has a lot to learn. However, it’s fully possible that he sees some game action this season depending on what happens with Philadelphia’s quarterback situation.
Blood clots are dangerous and unpredictable, so there’s no telling how long Hurts will be out. And with the Eagles signing quarterback Andy Dalton in the offseason to compete with McKee for the backup spot, it’s clear they have some reservations about the latter.
For an offense that has struggled all season long, Milton could be a jolt of energy if he is inserted into the lineup at any point. McKee will start for now as the team gets more updates and a solid timeline on Hurts’ recovery, but don’t rule out the possibility of a quarterback switch depending on how he performs.
