Education: Inspirational students | The Seattle Times

The editorial “Seattle schools show heart in honoring graduates with grit” (June 30, Opinion) is an important read as we struggle with financial disparity between the billionaires and those deeply in need. Digging oneself out of hardships and challenges requires true grit, especially among our young students.

Elizabeth Palma Alvarado’s life story of needing to relearn her “perfect life” could have been the story of our family after a mass shooting, along with other struggles. Navigating daunting obstacles that last for months or years requires grit that most individuals will thankfully never encounter. As a daily reader of The Seattle Times, I would love to read articles on the 72 student recipients.

Too many people in our society hold a grudge, believing the answer is a gun or a knife to end the lives of others. Reading the success of these students, who have been honored for living a life of purpose and overcoming their significant hardship, is inspirational. Congratulations to The Times, the school District and the honored recipients. Well done!
