Hit and Run victim Nate Baker (left), allegedly killed by Rosali I. Fernandez-Cruz an illegal alien (right) on 4/2/25

Four years of Joe Biden’s open borders is still taking a toll on US citizens. A South Carolina college student was killed in a hit-and-run by an illegal alien this past Wednesday.

21-year-old Nate Baker was hit and killed on a motorcycle by 24-year-old Rosali I. Fernandez-Cruz, an illegal alien who had deportation orders in 2018. He was originally arrested by the Border Patrol in Texas in December of 2016.

Fernandez-Cruz failed to yield the right of way while driving a truck. After hitting Baker, he fled and did not try to help him and did not report the crash to the police. He has been charged with the hit-and-run death of Baker.

After driving off, Fernandez-Cruz took off on foot to try and avoid law enforcement. A nearby police officer was able to find him and took him into custody. According to law enforcement, there were two other men with him that also fled the scene. At this time, there were no charges filed for the other two men with no information as to their legal status in the US.

NEW: Per DHS source, this Salvadoran illegal alien had an active deportation order before this happened. He was first arrested by Border Patrol near Hidalgo, TX in December 2016. He was released with a notice to appear. He never showed up – and in September 2018, a DOJ… https://t.co/3UKTT2CyqY

The University sent out a statement in regard to Baker, who was majoring in business.

“Our prayers and deepest sympathies go out to Nate’s family and friends during this difficult time,” according to university officials. “Counseling staff are actively working with those impacted, and services are available to any member of our campus community affected by this tragedy.” According to the Fox News article.

Baker was also in the fraternity Phi Gamma Delta, which was confirmed by their Instagram post.

“Yesterday, we lost not just a brother, but a leader, a role model, and a true embodiment of what our fraternity stands for,” the fraternity wrote in the post. “Nate Baker brought light, laughter, and love into all of our lives. Nate will always be remembered for the way he showed up for others and the impact he had on everyone around him.” Fox News reported of their statement.

Fernandez-Cruz is currently being held in Columbia, South Carolina, at a detention center.

    Fox News Reported:

A junior at the University of South Carolina was killed Wednesday in a hit-and-run near campus involving an illegal immigrant from El Salvador, according to Department of Homeland Security (DHS) officials.

In an X post Thursday, Tricia McLaughlin, DHS assistant secretary for public affairs, said the driver was “in our country illegally,” noting 21-year-old Nathanial “Nate” G. Baker “should be alive today.”

Rosali I. Fernandez-Cruz, 24, is charged with hit-and-run resulting in death, failure to give information and render aid, failure to yield the right of way and driving without a license, according to a statement from the Columbia Police Department (CPD).
