Israel-Hamas war: Escalation and civilian deaths

Re: “Israel expands attacks in Gaza” (May 17, Nation & World):

Tragically, again we learn of Israeli airstrikes and civilian deaths, mostly women and children. It will continue to be this way as long as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his military leaders think they can defeat Hamas by dropping bombs.

It took the U.S. years and years to learn in Vietnam the war could not be won by bombing. When the enemy hides among the local population and conducts guerrilla warfare, no amount of bombing will win the war. Until Israeli leadership is willing to put “boots on the ground,” in force, this war will continue. Sending in ground forces will be ugly and costly.
