Jane Seymour has revealed why her real-life romance with “Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman” co-star Joe Lando ended almost as quickly as it began. The actress, 75, admitted that she and her former on-screen love interest fell for each other while filming the show’s pilot in the early 1990s. However, their relationship hit a roadblock when they realized they had very different ideas about starting a family. According to Seymour, Lando had his heart set on a traditional family life, complete with four children and a “younger wife.” However, Seymour was already a mother and more than a decade older than him.
Jane Seymour Reveals Joe Lando Wanted A ‘Younger Wife’
Seymour opened up about her brief romance with Lando during a “Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman” reunion panel at 90s Con in Hartford, Connecticut, on October 17. As reported by Entertainment Weekly, the actress explained that their relationship ended because they wanted different things from life.
“We realized that Joe really needed to — he had a plan,” Seymour recalled.
She described his vision as a “four-child, white picket fence” future, which also included a “younger wife.” At the time, Seymour already had two children and believed she wouldn’t be able to have any more. Lando, meanwhile, was in his early 30s and had yet to start the family he envisioned. The age difference wasn’t the only obstacle. Their expectations about children made Seymour question whether they could realistically build a future together. But years later, the actress had the last laugh.
Jane Seymour Jokes She Proved Joe Lando Wrong By Having Twins

Seymour couldn’t resist poking fun at how things turned out after her romance with Lando ended. Although she once believed having more children wasn’t possible, she later welcomed twin sons, John and Kristopher, with her then-husband James Keach in 1995.
“I showed him,” Seymour joked during the reunion panel. “I had twins.”
The remark drew attention to the irony of their breakup. One of the reasons Seymour and Lando went their separate ways was her belief that she couldn’t give him the large family he wanted. She eventually became a mother of four, while Lando went on to have four children of his own. The actress’ lighthearted recollection also showed how comfortably the former couple can now discuss a relationship that once made working together difficult.
Jane Seymour And Joe Lando Fell In Love After A Flash Flood

Long before their breakup, Seymour and Lando experienced what sounded like a scene straight out of their television drama. The two met while filming the pilot for “Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman,” in which Seymour played Dr. Michaela Quinn and Lando portrayed her love interest, Byron Sully. Seymour recalled being immediately struck by her co-star’s appearance.
During the reunion panel, she described thinking that Lando was extraordinarily handsome when she first saw him. Their attraction grew stronger after a flash flood disrupted filming. According to E! News, Lando helped Seymour escape the dangerous conditions in his pickup truck. The two later stopped for Mexican food and inexpensive margaritas. That unexpected outing changed their relationship.
“We really fell in love,” Seymour admitted, before joking that she had finally revealed their secret.
She also suggested that the chemistry audiences noticed between Michaela and Sully during the pilot wasn’t entirely acting. For a brief period, their television love story had become a real one.
Jane Seymour And Joe Lando Had To Work Together After Their Breakup

Although their romance was short-lived, Seymour and Lando couldn’t simply walk away from each other.
“Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman” became a hit, running for six seasons from 1993 to 1998, with the two actors playing one of the show’s central romantic couples.
That meant continuing to portray characters who were falling in love even after their own relationship had ended. In a June 2026 interview with TVLine, Seymour recalled how complicated things became once the series was picked up. By then, both actors had moved on to other relationships, and Seymour was involved with James Keach, who went on to direct some of the show’s romantic scenes.
The situation was hardly ideal for two people trying to leave a breakup behind. Seymour and Lando have also acknowledged that they struggled to get along during parts of the show’s run. Yet whatever tension existed behind the scenes didn’t stop them from convincing audiences that Michaela and Sully belonged together.
Jane Seymour And Joe Lando Remain Close Friends Decades Later

More than three decades after their brief romance, Seymour and Lando have developed a friendship that has survived both their breakup and the end of “Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman.” The former co-stars reunited at 90s Con, where they spoke openly about their past and joked about how well they still know each other. Seymour said they can practically finish each other’s sentences, while Lando compared their dynamic to that of an old married couple.
Their friendship has also extended well beyond public appearances. When Lando lost his home during the devastating California wildfires in January 2025, Seymour welcomed him and his family into her Malibu home. The actors have continued working together over the years, including a reunion on Seymour’s series “Harry Wild.”
Both have also found happiness in their personal lives. Lando has been married to Kirsten Barlow since 1997, while Seymour is engaged to musician and physician John Zambetti. Their romantic relationship may not have lasted, but the two have remained part of each other’s lives long after their days playing television’s beloved frontier couple.
