Jen Shah was arrested in March 2021 alongside one of her assistants, Stuart Smith. The duo was charged with conspiracy to commit wire fraud in connection with telemarketing and conspiracy to commit money laundering.

Manhattan U.S. Attorney Audrey Strauss said in a press release after Shah’s arrest, “Jennifer Shah, who portrays herself as a wealthy and successful businessperson on ‘reality’ television, and Stuart Smith, who is portrayed as Shah’s ‘first assistant,’ allegedly generated and sold ‘lead lists’ of innocent individuals for other members of their scheme to repeatedly scam.”

The statement continued, “In actual reality and as alleged, the so-called business opportunities pushed on the victims by Shah, Smith, and their co-conspirators were just fraudulent schemes, motivated by greed, to steal victims’ money. Now, these defendants face time in prison for their alleged crimes.”

Jen Shah Pleads Guilty To Charges

Shah and Smith initially pleaded not guilty to the charges against them. However, they entered a guilty plea in July 2022.

The television personality appeared in a New York court to switch her original not guilty plea to guilty. She took responsibility for the fraud and money laundering charges against her. She told the judge that she committed “wire fraud, offering services with little to no value.” The Bravolebrity added, “We used interstate telephones and emails. I knew many of the purchasers were over the age of 55. I am so sorry.”

Shah’s attorney, Priya Chaudhry, told PEOPLE Magazine, “Ms. Shah is a good woman who crossed a line. She accepts full responsibility for her actions and deeply apologizes to all who have been harmed.”

Chaudhry added, “Ms. Shah is also sorry for disappointing her husband, children, family, friends, and supporters. Jen pled guilty because she wants to pay her debt to society and put this ordeal behind her and her family.”

On January 6, 2023, Shah was sentenced to six and a half years in prison for her role in orchestrating the telemarketing conspiracy. Her husband, Sharrieff, and their sons, Sharieff Jr. and Omar, were in the courtroom when the sentence was read out.

Shah apologized for her actions and for hurting innocent people and promised to do all she could to “earn the funds to pay restitution.”

Her attorney also told PEOPLE Magazine in a statement, “Jen Shah deeply regrets the mistakes that she has made and is profoundly sorry to the people she has hurt. Jen has faith in our justice system, understands that anyone who breaks the law will be punished, and accepts this sentence as just.”
