Jets’ Glenn addresses ongoing handling of Fields, Taylor situation

While most expect the New York Jets will start quarterback Justin Fields over backup Tyrod Taylor coming off their bye, first-year Jets head coach Aaron Glenn declined to confirm any news about the situation ahead of the club’s break.

Understandably, Glenn was asked during his Monday media availability about the Jets’ depth chart ahead of their home game versus the Cleveland Browns (2-6) on Nov. 9.

Aaron Glenn keeping quarterback plans “close to the vest”

“You know I’m not going to give you that answer,” Glenn said, as shared by Myles Simmons of Pro Football Talk. “I’m going to keep that close to the vest.”

Taylor seemingly was on track to start the Jets’ game at the Cincinnati Bengals on Oct. 26 before he was ruled out of that contest due to a bone bruise in his knee. Fields then completed 21-of-32 passes for 244 yards and a touchdown versus a bad Bengals defense en route to helping the Jets earn a 39-38 win that improved them to 1-7 on the season. Despite that result, the Jets could become sellers ahead of the NFL trade deadline, which will arrive at 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday.

“It helps the quarterback’s confidence when the player and the coach talk and they know who the guy is,” Glenn said about not revealing the identity of his QB1 to outsiders on Monday. “It’s not that I’m telling it to you guys. That has nothing to do with the player’s confidence.”

Do Justin Fields, Tyrod Taylor know who is starting vs. Browns?

Shortly after Glenn spoke with reporters, ESPN BET had the Jets as 2.5-point favorites over the Browns. It sounds like those inside the Jets locker room may already know who will be in the lineup for the Week 10 matchup at MetLife Stadium.

“That will be between me and the player,” Glenn added about who will start against Cleveland. “I don’t understand why you guys keep doing it. It’s really getting hilarious, too, because you guys keep asking the same question and I keep giving you the same answer.”

It seems as if reporters will have to get used to Glenn embracing his inner Nick Saban for at least the next handful of days.
