Kevin O’Connell reacts to J.J. McCarthy comments about Kyler Murray

Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy generated headlines when he said that sharing the roster with free-agency signing Kyler Murray is “like the same feeling when you’re in high school, and there’s another person on the other side of the room.”

While speaking with reporters on Thursday, Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell did his best to put any controversy related to McCarthy’s comments to bed for good.

J.J. McCarthy, Kyler Murray have a “very professional” relationship

“The interpretation of those comments will be what they are,” O’Connell said, per Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk. “I would just say, in the room, day to day, the dialogue between those guys, the interactions, have been very professional. And more than that, it’s been a positive room. I think [backup Carson Wentz] has a lot to do with that, as the veteran in the room. And I would never discount (quarterbacks coach) Josh McCown’s extensive career as a player in those quarterback rooms and how he manages the room and everybody in there.”

It’s understandable that McCarthy may not be planning to send Murray a Christmas card later this year. The perception has existed throughout the spring that Murray is the heavy favorite to emerge as Minnesota’s QB1, and Murray reportedly has been the more impressive of the two signal-callers throughout workouts open to media members.

Nevertheless, O’Connell suggested that everybody in the team’s quarterback room is working to help each other improve as part of an overall goal to get the team in a better position to win games come September.

“I didn’t make a lot out of it,” O’Connell added about McCarthy’s original comments. “I know there was some reaction to it. That’s probably not the first time there’s gonna be a reaction to those guys answering questions about the situation. That’s what the competition is all about. There’s no hiding anything. It’s going to be displayed on the field, and their teammates and coaching staff and the guys in this building have to feel a conviction about the direction we go, and you do that by your daily habits, and just improving.”

How is J.J. McCarthy responding to possibly losing his job to Kyler Murray?

Shortly after McCarthy made his comments, a report said that “rival front offices” deemed that moment as “a plea for help.” Some continue to think the 2024 first-round draft pick, who has thus far made just 10 career regular-season starts, may ask for a trade if he is relegated to backup duties before August comes to an end.

“I think he’s handling it really well,” O’Connell said about how McCarthy has responded to the Vikings signing Murray to a team-friendly contract earlier this offseason. “He’s been great in the meeting rooms. As a captain and a guy that helps lead our team, he’s been phenomenal.”

McCarthy had better start being phenomenal on the field when training camp gets underway if he wants to be in the lineup for Minnesota’s Week 1 game versus the Green Bay Packers on Sept. 13.
