WNBA superstar Caitlin Clark has become a battleground for basketball fans and non-basketball fans to push their agendas, and we received another reminder of that on Wednesday.
That is when a group of 11 republican lawmakers, led by Texas representative August Pfluger, wrote a letter to WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert demanding that the league take accountability for what they call “multiple attacks” against the Indiana Fever star.

The lawmakers’ letter cites their concerns over “reports” that “attacks against Clark may be racially motivated.”
The letter reads in part (from ESPN):
“As Commissioner, you have an obligation to ensure that every player competes in a safe and professional environment, both on and off the court, free from violence, discrimination, or retaliation,” the letter said. “If discrimination or retaliation is occurring and creating a hostile work environment, we support any appropriate investigation by the Department of Justice, the Department of Labor, or the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. If true, such conduct could constitute violations of federal civil rights laws.”
The lawmakers requested a response from the league by July 24.
The Fever said on Wednesday they had no knowledge of the letter, but said they will continue to stick up for their team and player.
The physical play directed toward Clark has been a storyline for most of her pro career, and it only seems to be getting worse as people from every direction try to get involved.
Per ESPN, the lawmakers want the WNBA to respond to their letter by July 24 and answer three questions “about the league’s review process for ‘physical hostility and violence on the court,’ how the league holds players accountable for ‘overly aggressive acts on the court,’ and what steps the league is taking to protect players from online harassment.'”
The treatment of star players in every league, men’s and women’s, is a constant talking point as fans and critics have fierce views on how it’s handled. Depending on who you ask, the league’s biggest names either get preferential treatment from the league or get absolutely zero protection. It is usually just limited to the league’s own little bubble.
In that regard, this is probably the truest sign of all that the WNBA has become a top league in North America and is very much on the national radar. The more eyeballs a league has on it, the more prone it is to hot-takery and ridiculous commentary.
Somehow, though, Clark and the WNBA situation have broken containment and become a growing political talking point. Lawmakers writing sternly worded letters to the league only serve to throw gasoline on top of that already raging inferno. It is not going to go away anytime soon.
