Reiner post shows how low Trump will go

I spent all day Monday talking myself out of doing another cartoon about President Donald Trump. The president’s near daily outrages and acts of buffoonery can drive a cartoonist cuckoo if he or she tries to chase after each one.

But, finally, at about 10 p.m., I decided I could not let Trump’s despicable comment about the murder of beloved Hollywood director Rob Reiner go unremarked. With his latest social media screed, Trump had descended to a new depth of vile loutishness.

Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, were found dead in their home. Their daughter, Romy, discovered her parents’ bodies and their son, Nick, has been arrested on suspicion of murder. This is a horrific tragedy that any person with an ounce of empathy would view with sadness and compassion.

Not Trump. He sent out a comment on his social media platform that said the Reiners were murdered “reportedly due to the anger he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable affliction with a mind crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME.” Trump ranted on, saying Reiner “was known to have driven people CRAZY by his raging obsession of President Donald J. Trump, with his obvious paranoia reaching new heights as the Trump Administration surpassed all goals and expectations of greatness.”

The odiously flippant way in which the president sought to score political points against a critic who had just died a horrible death is made even more galling by his delusional claims to greatness. We have long known that Trump is a man lacking in grace, good taste and humility who is consumed by his craving for adulation and his vicious enmity for anyone who fails to stroke his bloated ego, but, with each passing day, it becomes more obvious that the president of the United States is a sick human being who disgraces the office he holds.
