Sanders-Cowboys rumors gain more steam with bombshell report

The Dallas Cowboys hiring Deion Sanders as their next head coach no longer seems inconceivable.

On Thursday, Ed Werder of WFAA-TV in Dallas tweeted that the Colorado Buffaloes head coach’s inner circle is pushing him to take the job.

“Regarding Deion Sanders: I’m being told that [Sanders] would almost certainly accept if [Cowboys owner] Jerry Jones offers it, that those around him are encouraging him to pursue it and that Jones is enamored with the idea,” wrote Werder.

Earlier this week, Sanders revealed he and Jones discussed the Cowboys’ head-coaching vacancy. He didn’t indicate he would accept the position.

“To hear from Jerry Jones is truly delightful, and it’s intriguing,” Sanders said, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter. “I love Jerry and believe in Jerry. After you hang up, and process it, and think about it, it’s intriguing. But I love Boulder and everything there is about our team, the coaches, our student body and the community.”

Of course, he could still leave. In an interview on ESPN’s “College Gameday” in October 2022, Sanders said he would stay with historically Black college Jackson State. Nearly two months later, he became the Colorado HC.

It’s easy to understand why the Cowboys are an attractive destination for Sanders. The former defensive back starred for the franchise from 1995-99, winning a Super Bowl. Ending its 29-year championship drought would augment the Pro Football Hall of Famer’s legacy.

Sanders previously told “Good Morning America” he would consider the NFL if he could coach his sons, Colorado quarterback Shedeur and safety Shilo.

However, on a Thursday episode of “Get Up,” Schefter said he doesn’t expect the Cowboys to draft Shedeur Sanders. He added Deion Sanders “would be thrilled to coach [Cowboys QB] Dak Prescott.”

Don’t be stunned if Deion Sanders lands in Dallas. On Tuesday, DraftKings Sportsbook listed him as the favorite (+100) to become the Cowboys’ next HC.
