‘South Park’ Makes Shocking Move Amid Charlie Kirk’s Controversy

Comedy Central has postponed the premiere of a new “South Park” episode that was set to air on Wednesday, September 17, the first installment to be released since the shocking assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The last-minute delay has fueled speculation, as the long-running animated series had lampooned Charlie Kirk in an earlier episode this season and often uses current events as inspiration for its satire.

Comedy Central Delays New ‘South Park’ Episode Citing ‘Last-Minute’ Production Issues

Instead of airing as planned, Comedy Central confirmed the episode will be pushed back by one week. “Apparently, when you do everything at the last minute, sometimes you don’t get it done,” creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone said in a statement. “This one’s on us. We didn’t get it done in time. Thanks to Comedy Central and ‘South Park’ fans for being so understanding. Tune in next week!”

The official reason given was production timing, though the network notably did not promote the episode beforehand, adding to speculation about whether the plot may have touched on Kirk’s assassination.

    The Charlie Kirk Parody

Earlier this season, Charlie Kirk had already been portrayed through a parody version of Eric Cartman. The storyline followed Cartman launching a podcast and debating “woke, liberal students,” in a sharp send-up of Kirk’s combative style and frequent campus debates. The parody skewered Kirk’s mannerisms and physical features, showing Cartman arguing about abortion while sitting on a toilet bowl, and later storming a campus rally, Bible in hand, as a self-declared “master debater.”

Following Charlie Kirk’s death, some of his supporters accused “South Park” of fostering hostility toward him. One user on X claimed the show had “fomented the hatred necessary to get Kirk assassinated,” while another went so far as to say Parker and Stone were “responsible.”

Fans of the show, meanwhile, questioned whether the abrupt postponement was really about production delays or if Comedy Central was trying to avoid reigniting controversy in the immediate aftermath of Kirk’s killing.

Before his assassination, Kirk himself had embraced the parody. He reposted clips from the episode to his social media and told “Fox News” that he was flattered by the attention. “Honestly, my first reaction is that I kinda laughed,” Kirk admitted. “They’re going to obviously make fun of me… but I think it’s kind of funny, and it kind of goes to show the cultural impact and the resonance that our movement has been able to achieve. We as conservatives should be able to take a joke.”

The late 31-year-old added, “We shouldn’t take ourselves so seriously.”

That sentiment was echoed by Andrew Kolvet, executive producer of “The Charlie Kirk Show” and a close friend of the late activist. Posting on X, Kolvet said Kirk would have wanted the parody episode to remain available. “Hey @paramountplus, as someone who can speak with some authority on this, Charlie loved that he was featured in ‘South Park,'” Kolvet wrote. “He told me many times. He would want the episode back up.”

    What’s Next For’ South Park’?

For now, Comedy Central insists the delay is temporary and fans can expect the episode to air next week. Still, the timing of the postponement, coming just after Kirk’s death and the backlash over his parody, doesn’t go unnoticed.

Whether the rescheduled episode will reference Charlie Kirk’s assassination remains unclear, but viewers will undoubtedly be watching closely when the series returns.
