Here is a fact that sounds like a party trick but is well established: one of the best quick estimates of a person’s general intelligence is the size of their vocabulary. Give someone a good vocabulary test and you have captured a surprising amount of what a full IQ test would tell you.
The important thing is why, because the obvious reading is the wrong one. It is not that knowing long words makes a person smarter. The relationship runs the other way, and it is more interesting than the party trick suggests.

Why words track intelligence
In the standard IQ batteries, the vocabulary section is among the most strongly linked to general intelligence, the underlying factor psychologists label g. On the widely used Wechsler test, the vocabulary subtest is one of the most g-loaded parts of the whole assessment, and vocabulary scores tend to correlate with overall IQ somewhere in the region of 0.7 to 0.8. For a single measure of “just” word knowledge, that is a lot.
The explanation most researchers favor is a version of what Raymond Cattell called investment theory. The idea is that raw reasoning ability gets invested, over years, into learning. Someone with more of that ability tends to pick up words faster, work out unfamiliar ones from context more reliably, and retain them more deeply. A large vocabulary, on this view, is the accumulated residue of a mind applying itself to language over a long time.
So the vocabulary is not the intelligence. It is the track left behind by intelligence doing its ordinary work, year after year, which is exactly what makes it such a useful footprint to measure.
The kind of intelligence that keeps growing
This connects to a distinction that has held up well since the 1960s. Cattell, with his student John Horn, split general intelligence into two broad kinds. Fluid intelligence is on-the-spot reasoning, solving a novel puzzle with no learned knowledge to lean on. Crystallized intelligence is the store of knowledge you have accumulated, and vocabulary is its classic measure.
The two age very differently. Fluid reasoning tends to peak in early adulthood and slowly decline. Crystallized intelligence, including vocabulary, keeps climbing well into later life, often still rising through a person’s sixties. Your vocabulary is quite possibly larger and more precise now than it has ever been.
That is part of why vocabulary is such a stable window onto intelligence. It draws on the reasoning ability that IQ tests prize, but it stores the result in a form that does not fade the way raw processing speed does. The confound worth taking seriously
None of this makes vocabulary a pure readout of innate brainpower, and it would be a mistake to treat it that way.
Words have to come from somewhere. A large vocabulary reflects not only ability but exposure: how much a person has read, how language-rich their home was as a child, how much schooling they had, which language they were tested in. Two people of equal underlying ability can end up with very different vocabularies because one spent a childhood surrounded by books and the other did not.
How early those differences begin is itself debated. A landmark study published by Betty Hart and Todd Risley in 1995 estimated that, during their first four years, children in professional families might hear roughly 30 million more words than children in families receiving welfare—an estimate that became known as the “30-million-word gap.” Later researchers, including a 2018 study by Douglas Sperry and colleagues, have argued the original number was overstated and varies by how you count. The exact size is genuinely contested. What is not is the basic point that the language a child is surrounded by differs enormously from home to home, long before any of it is a choice.
This means vocabulary measures ability and opportunity tangled together. It is a strong correlate of intelligence, not a clean measurement of it, and unlike some cognitive traits it can be grown deliberately by reading widely. A modest vocabulary is not a verdict on anyone, and a large one is partly a record of good fortune.
What this does not mean
There is one last twist that undercuts the snobbish version of this idea entirely.
The link is about knowing many words, not about parading big ones. In fact, deliberately using needlessly complex language tends to backfire. The psychologist Daniel Oppenheimer ran a series of studies, published in 2006 under the gloriously self-mocking title “Consequences of Erudite Vernacular Utilized Irrespective of Necessity,” and found that readers rated the authors of needlessly complicated writing as less intelligent, not more. Swapping simple words for long ones made people look worse.
So the real signal is a wide vocabulary quietly available when a precise word is needed, not a show of obscure ones. The person with the genuinely large vocabulary is often the one who chooses the plain word because they can see it is the better fit.
The footprint is real, in other words, but it points at comprehension rather than performance. What tracks intelligence is how many words you can understand and deploy accurately, not how many syllables you can fit into a sentence to impress.
