Trump administration: Shake off sense of helplessness

As I watch what is happening with our new administration, I can only conclude that the parallels with the rise of Nazism are undeniable. I see this in the power grab; the disregard for the Constitution; the retaliation for disagreement with President Donald Trump; the breaking of laws, and the pronouncement of new ones; and the empowerment of allies. This time the scapegoats are immigrants, and, again, the LBGTQ community.

While we may have wondered about the German population not speaking out against that regime, it is much easier to understand now as this new reality unfolds in our own country. It can be a sense of helplessness, of not knowing what to do, or of feeling we as individuals will not have an effect. We are not powerless in this country.

Let it not be said of us that we did nothing.

    Maureen Mohrbacher, Tacoma
