Why Steelers made unexpected Aaron Rodgers decision

A report from earlier on Tuesday suggested that “there remains a sense within the” Pittsburgh Steelers that quarterback Aaron Rodgers will play for the club through the 2026 season and will confirm that decision “in the coming weeks.”

Later on Tuesday, it was learned that the Steelers have protected themselves regarding Rodgers’ short-term future.

Steelers place rarely-used tender on Aaron Rodgers

ESPN’s Adam Schefter revealed that the Steelers placed the unrestricted free agent tender on Rodgers. Per the terms of that tender, Rodgers will make roughly $15M if he plays for the Steelers this season. Additionally, Rodgers will only be able to sign with the Steelers once training-camp practices get underway.

If the future Hall of Famer signs with a different team, the Steelers would receive a compensatory draft pick. There’s been no indication since the end of the 2025 season that any other club has come all that close to signing Rodgers, who has been a free agent since the new league year opened in March.

The Minnesota Vikings, Atlanta Falcons and Miami Dolphins are among the teams that potentially could have been interested in Rodgers earlier this spring. Those franchises have since addressed their quarterback needs via other transactions.

Why the Steelers used this tender on Aaron Rodgers

“Contrary to the report, it’s NOT a right of first refusal,” NFL insider Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk wrote about the latest Rodgers-related development. “For now, Rodgers can still sign with any team at any time, even if another team offers less than whatever the Steelers have or will put on the table. If Rodgers signs with another team, the transaction counts toward both teams’ compensatory pick formulas. …As of July 22, that’s when things get complicated. The Steelers at that point would hold exclusive negotiating rights to Rodgers. So if he’s thinking about, for example, staying home and waiting for a starter on a contending team to suffer an injury, the Steelers would hold his rights. To get Rodgers at that point, a new team would have to work out a trade with the Steelers.”

Word about the Steelers’ decision went public not long after NFL insider Jason La Canfora of SportsBoom US shared that Pittsburgh had been treading “lightly” amid this situation, “given how mercurial Rodgers can be.”

It remains to be seen how the often-unpredictable Rodgers will react to the use of a tender many casual fans were unfamiliar with as of Tuesday morning.
