Why Tate McRae Is Ruling Herself Out Of Playing Britney Spears In Biopic

While Tate McRae may be flattered about the Britney Spears comparisons, the “sports car” songstress shut down the idea that she’s the right person to portray the Princess of Pop in a biopic.

During a recent interview, McRae, who recently wrapped her blockbuster “Miss Possessive” tour, opened up about fame, her rise to superstardom, and the harsh downsides that come with being a household name.

For those unfamiliar with McRae as an artist, she’s a global sensation known for her fiery, addictive hits, “greedy,” “exes,” and “it’s ok i’m ok.” McRae, 22, delivers the tracks with intense energy, amazing vocals, and show-stopping choreography, so it’s no surprise the Britney Spears comparisons emerged soon after she gained traction.

Over the last few years, fans have expressed interest in seeing the “So Close To What” singer portray Spears in a biopic; however, McRae seemed firmly opposed to the idea during her interview with Rolling Stone.

According to McRae, she wouldn’t be the right person for the job because she doesn’t act, and she doesn’t believe she embodies Spears completely.

“I feel like I look nothing like her, sound nothing like her,” she said. “So, I don’t know if I’d be a great fit.”

This isn’t the first time McRae has tried to distance herself from comparisons to Spears.

According to an earlier report from The Blast, McRae previously acknowledged the compliment before noting Spears’ massive impact on the music industry.

“It’s such a crazy statement because no one can compare to Britney Spears,” she said. “That’s the blueprint.”

In that same interview, McRae also seemed to imply that she still had more to learn from some of the music industry’s biggest stars.

“Whenever I’m out of breath on stage, I’m always like, well, f-ck Beyoncé can do it — I don’t have an excuse!'” she said. “She’s figured out a way to run on the treadmill and sing at the same time. You watch back to Coachella, and she was dancing and singing that whole time and figured out a way to sound phenomenal and nail it.”

Elsewhere during her interview, McRae opened up about the backlash she received in the summer of 2025 after collaborating with Morgan Wallen, a polarizing country star who has dominated the Billboard charts for years.

After promoting their single, “What I Want,” McRae was flooded with critical comments from some of her biggest supporters, many of whom expressed their disappointment with her choice. “Sorry, but Tate McRae making a song with Morgan Wallen might be the stupidest sh-t she has ever done,” a user wrote.

McRae, however, explained that she chose to work with Wallen because of her love of country music and her desire to cross genres. She later clarified, “It was just about the song for me.”

“I didn’t realize how much a song would be connected to all the other factors, and it really shocked me,” she continued.

Despite the noise, McRae doesn’t regret her choice. “I don’t think you should regret anything in life, because it gives you so much clarity,” she said. “I think controversy and criticism is a way of learning and figuring out what you want to move forward with, and how that shapes you as a person. I think it’s all important.”
