Hurricanes could turn Alexander Nikishin into the NHL’s next blockbuster trade

The Carolina Hurricanes may have to decide whether their promising young defenseman is more valuable on the roster or at the center of a much larger trade.

The Hurricanes have no obvious reason to trade Alexander Nikishin. He is 24 years old, coming off an impressive rookie season and already owns a Stanley Cup ring.

Of course, that is also why nearly every team would want him.

Nikishin remains a restricted free agent after recording 11 goals and 33 points in 81 games during his first full NHL season. At 6-foot-3 and 218 pounds, he offers the size, skating ability and offensive production teams spend years trying to find on defense.

Carolina could simply sign him to a long-term extension and keep most of its championship-winning blue line together. That would be the comfortable answer. General manager Eric Tulsky may be examining whether Nikishin can deliver something even more valuable through a trade.

Alexander Nikishin could become Carolina’s most valuable trade chip

Multiple teams have reportedly confirmed that the Hurricanes are considering trade interest in Nikishin while weighing the cost of his next contract. Carolina is not shopping a disappointing player whose value has hit the floor. It would be moving one of the NHL’s most attractive young defensemen while his value is soaring.

That creates an opportunity to ask for far more than draft picks and prospects.

David Pagnotta reported earlier this month on an episode of “DFO Rundown” that teams interested in Nikishin could also be asked to take Jesperi Kotkaniemi. The 26-year-old center carries a $4.82 million cap hit through the 2029-30 season.

Kotkaniemi has never developed into the offensive player Carolina hoped it was acquiring. His contract is not an emergency, but removing it would give the Hurricanes greater flexibility to pursue an established star. Nikishin may be the sweetener capable of convincing another team to swallow the remaining four years.

That would be an expensive way to correct an older mistake. It could also create the NHL’s next blockbuster.

Hurricanes cannot afford to trade Alexander Nikishin for financial relief alone

Carolina should resist moving Nikishin merely to clear Kotkaniemi’s salary. Trading a young defenseman with top-pair potential to dump a contract would provide immediate flexibility while creating a potentially enormous problem later.

According to Spotrac, the Hurricanes have $9.88 million in available cap space. They are not trapped against the ceiling with Nikishin holding the only key to the cell. If Carolina moves him, the return needs to make the defending champions better immediately.

A proven scorer would make sense. So would a top-line forward capable of remaining with the Hurricanes beyond one season. Tulsky has already demonstrated that he is willing to make bold decisions when a star becomes available. Carolina acquired Mikko Rantanen in 2025 and then moved him to the Dallas Stars when a long-term agreement could not be reached.

Nikishin gives the Hurricanes another powerful bargaining piece, but this situation is different. He is younger, controllable and already fits their system.

The safe move is to pay him. The fascinating move is to package him with Kotkaniemi and chase a star who raises Carolina’s ceiling.

After winning the Stanley Cup, the Hurricanes do not need to dismantle their roster. If they believe another championship requires one substantial addition, however, Nikishin is the trade chip capable of bringing it to Raleigh. The price of that gamble would be painfully high, and so would the potential reward.
