By all accounts, second-year New York Giants
running back Cam Skattebo has recovered from the gruesome dislocation of his right ankle that he suffered on Oct. 26, 2025, enough that he’ll be good to go for the team’s regular-season opener against the rival Dallas Cowboys on Sept. 13.
It sounds like Skattebo seriously thought about not playing in that contest or in any other future games.

Per Jared Dubin of CBS Sports, Skattebo revealed during a Thursday appearance on the FanDuel TV “Up & Adams” program that he contemplated retirement “probably a month” into his recovery.
“Like, the first month was kind of like, ‘D—. Do I really want to do this?’ And then…it was seven games, you know? I got to go back and play,” Skattebo explained. “There’s no shot. If it was the end of the year and I was like, ‘OK, I’m over this?’ [But] I didn’t feel that way at all.”
As Dubin noted, it was later learned that Skattebo also suffered an open tibia fracture and a ruptured deltoid ligament. While there were concerns earlier this summer that Skattebo could miss games this coming fall, he felt strong and confident enough to perform backflips in public before training camp got underway.

“Coming out of college, going in the NFL, I gave myself one rule, and it was, if I ever got a major injury, I was done playing,” Skattebo added. “That happened seven games into my career, so it kind of sucked. But I think that really helped me find who I am as a player and as a person. I was able to sit at home for 14 hours a day, doing absolutely nothing, for weeks on end. So, just finding who I was, finding my happiness, finding the person I wanted to be on and off the field. And I think that’s something I’ve built over the last 9-10 months.”
Giants fans are likely happy to know that Skattebo has reclaimed his happiness, as he is slated to be Big Blue’s RB1 against Dallas. Of course, one can only guess how Skattebo’s leg will hold up once he starts taking hits during meaningful games.
