Jerry Jones is right to be optimistic about Cowboys despite record

It should surprise no one to hear that Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is still bullish on his team. This is despite the fact that the Cowboys are 2-3-1 and coming off a tough loss on the road to the Carolina Panthers.

Keep in mind, the NFC East is wide open and the trade deadline is just around the corner.

The Philadelphia Eagles lead the division at 3-2 but they’ve lost two in a row. The Washington Commanders are technically in second place at 3-3, but they just lost to the Chicago Bears on “Monday Night Football.”

“It just reminded me that we are still in it,” Jones said on Tuesday, referencing the Commanders’ loss to the Bears, according to Todd Archer of ESPN. “I see much parity and then you factor in that these teams get compromised with injury — and we can have and may [have it too] — but if we should have some good go of it here over the next weeks ahead with our injury situation and return of injury and we can get some wins.”

Jones believes this team has what it takes to make a run, and as long as his quarterback, Dak Prescott, is playing at an MVP level, he’s probably right.

Dallas Cowboys have paths toward improvement in 2025

As he mentioned, though, there’s also health to consider. Star wideout CeeDee Lamb hasn’t played since Sept. 21 due to an ankle injury, but he should be back sooner rather than later.

The Cowboys can also go out and make a move at the trade deadline. Remember, they traded Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers and received two first-round picks back in the deal.

The Cowboys have a war chest, and Jones could very well use it at the deadline.

“Well, if there is a trade that would help the defense, we’re in position to make that trade,” Jones said.

He didn’t commit to making a trade and went as far as saying that he didn’t have one in mind, but there’s also the finances to keep in mind. Jones does have money to spend because Parsons no longer counts towards Dallas’ salary cap.

“That alone has increased our flexibility of being able to look at potential trades right now whereas you might have had hand cramps before,” Jones explained. “So we’re in position to look at a trade. That doesn’t mean we’re going to make one.”

Ultimately, Dallas’ 2-3-1 record may not be inspiring, but especially in this season’s NFC East, there’s still a good chance for the Cowboys to make a run.

There are multiple different ways this team can get better in-season, and that’s pretty rare for a team that has been down on its luck for the first month and a half of football.
