U.S. Olympic speed skater Jordan Stolz is quickly becoming the biggest story at the 2026 Milan Cortina Games.
On Saturday, Stolz earned his second gold medal in Milan, setting the Olympic record with a 33.77s run in the men’s 500m. He previously won the 1000m with in an Olympic record time of 1 minute, 6.28 seconds, making him the first American to take gold in both events since 1980, when Eric Heiden accomplished the feat.
That year, Heiden, who, like Stolz, is a Wisconsinite, finished with five Olympic golds, also winning the 1500m, 5000m and 10000m. Stolz has two more events: the 1500m and mass start, which is 16 laps (6400m) and features all competitors racing at the same time.
At the Inzell World Cup in Germany this January, Stolz won his second consecutive 1500m World Cup with a time of 1 minute, 41.95 seconds. The current Olympic record in the event is 1:43.21, set in 2022 by Kjeld Nuis.
