Seahawks get massive Sam Darnold injury update

Pockets of Seattle Seahawks fans likely feared the worst when starting quarterback Sam Darnold went down on the opening possession of Wednesday’s season opener against the New England Patriots with a hip injury that kept him out of the remainder of what became a 13-10 Seattle win.

During Thursday’s edition of “The Pat McAfee Show,” ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter revealed what would have to be considered a positive update regarding Darnold’s status for this fall.

Seahawks “dodged a bullet” after Sam Darnold injury

According to Schefter, the Seahawks believe they “dodged a bullet” regarding the Darnold injury. Schefter also told McAfee what somebody associated with the Seahawks said about Darnold’s setback.

“Still waiting on more details,” the Seahawks source told Schefter. “Think we avoided something really bad, though.”

Backup quarterback Drew Lock took the majority of the snaps for the Seahawks in Wednesday’s win over the Patriots. In total, he went 16-of-22 passing for 187 yards with one touchdown and no turnovers.

That said, the fact that Seattle only scored three points until Patriots quarterback Drake Maye became a turnover machine in the game’s fourth quarter understandably caused some to wonder if Seattle could make a trade for a signal-caller in the event that Darnold was sidelined indefinitely. It now seems like such a transaction won’t be necessary.

Sam Darnold is not coming back in Week 2?

“I think he’s gonna miss a little time here,” Schefter added about Darnold. Schefter also said that he believes Darnold will miss “multiple games, but the fewest out of multiple.”

Due to playing on Wednesday, the Seahawks will have a bit of a break before they play at the Arizona Cardinals for a Week 2 game on Sept. 20. Following that matchup, Seattle will hit the road for a game at the Washington Commanders on Sept. 27. They have a Week 4 home game against the Los Angeles Chargers.

For now, Lock will have extra time to prepare to face a Cardinals team that will open its season with a clash at the Chargers this coming Sunday.
