It’s past Halloween, and Sam Darnold is seeing ghosts again. Actually, the whole Seattle Seahawks team looked spooked as the Chicago Bears came into Lumen Field and stole the host’s candy on “Monday Night Football” with a 34-17 win that dropped the defending Super Bowl champs to 4-4 while raising the visitor’s record to 6-2.
Seahawks usually fare well on Monday night, but not this time
It was definitely not Seattle’s night on “MNF,” a showcase where it had gone 32-13-0 all-time prior to the Week 8 contest for an NFL-best .711 winning percentage.
The Bears didn’t care. Chicago QB Caleb Williams and company gashed the “Dark Side” defense for 373 yards in all, including 126 yards on the ground and four touchdowns that all came within the red zone with just one turnover.
The night started with a 17-play, 80-yard Chicago drive in the first quarter that finished with Williams’ one-yard scoring pass to Luther Burden III, and the Bears were ahead to stay. In between scores, they collected 22 first downs, including 13 through the air, as Williams finished 24-of-34 for 247 yards while being sacked just once.
He also completed a 39-yard catch-and-run with Kalif Raymond on 3rd- and-9 from the Seattle 44 in the fourth quarter, with the Bears ahead by just three at the time, that led to an insurance TD. Chicago also held the ball for a total of 35 minutes of game time, including drives that lasted over eight and six minutes each.
It wasn’t just the vaunted Seattle defense that failed on Monday, though. The Seahawks offense was largely stagnant for much of the contest, with Darnold finishing 17-of-34 for 188 yards through the air while being sacked three times and having a half-dozen of his passes knocked down.
He threw for two TDs, one each to Jaxon Smith-Njigba and Cooper Kupp, the second one bringing the Seahawks to within 20-17 early in the fourth quarter after a successful two-point conversion throw to Tory Horton.
