Wembanyama continues to amaze, posting historic 50-point game

It’s already becoming difficult for Victor Wembanyama to ever surprise anyone with his basketball brilliance. But on Wednesday night, he amazed the entire NBA community with a historic performance.

The Spurs’ 139-130 win over the Wizards saw Wembanyama put up the best outing of his young career, and that’s saying something. The 2023 No. 1 pick scored 50 points, besting his previous career-high for a single game of 40.

And while scoring 50 points would be impressive for any player at any age, at only 20, Wembanyama’s big game will go down in NBA history.

Wembanyama now owns the following distinctions:

    • The youngest center with a 50-point game.
    • The fastest to score 50 points in a game, doing so in only 26 minutes.
    • The youngest member of the San Antonio Spurs to ever score 50 points in a game.
    • The youngest center to score eight or more three-pointers in a game.

He also became the fourth youngest player ever to record a 50-point game, joining the likes of LeBron James, Devin Booker and Brandon Jennings.

And the player many call an “alien” posted his historic 50 points in a very efficient manner. Wembanyama connected on 18-of-29 shots from the field and 8-of-16 from three. He also added six rebounds, three blocks and two assists as well.

To say Wembanyama did it all would be a serious understatement.

This is also far from his only monster game of the season so far. The 2023-24 NBA Rookie of the Year now has three straight double-doubles. Prior to scoring 50, he scored 34 points with 14 rebounds against the Kings and 24 points and 16 rebounds against the Jazz.

Those who were looking for the French center to take another step in his career after such a strong rookie season are getting what they asked for and then some.

Wembanyama entered the game averaging 19.7 points, 10.5 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game while shooting 44.6%, all numbers that will now see a noticeable increase.

The sky truly appears to be the limit for Wembanyama’s greatness, something that has led San Antonio to being an improved team with a 6-6 record through their first 12 games of the 2024-25 season.
