Curry gets brutally honest about Warriors’ quiet offseason

The Golden State Warriors have been relatively inactive this offseason, as they didn’t sign any free agents, let Kevon Looney walk and still haven’t found a new home for restricted free agent Jonathan Kuminga.

Many analysts believe Golden State desperately needs to make moves to compete with the Thunder, Nuggets, Rockets, Timberwolves and the gauntlet of powerhouses in the Western Conference. Stephen Curry, though, is the least bit bothered by his team’s lack of activity.

In a chat with NBC Sports Bay Area’s Monte Poole at the American Century Championship in South Lake Tahoe, Curry explained why he trusts in his team’s front office and isn’t ready to panic just yet.

“The narrative outside versus the narrative inside might not always be the same,” Curry said. “We talk. We have communication. I know what’s going on to the point where I have a lot of confidence in our ability to put together a winning team next year. That’s all I want.”

The one free agent who has been constantly linked to the Warriors is Al Horford, the former five-time All-Star and NBA champion. According to ESPN’s Marc Spears, the Warriors “expected” Horford to put pen to paper last week but have yet to convince the former Florida Gator.

With free agent Gary Payton II unlikely to be brought back, the Warriors have only nine guaranteed players on the roster for next season. That list doesn’t include Kuminga, whose future remains uncertain. The Warriors reportedly may be forced to re-sign Kuminga and explore trading him later in the season due to the limited market for the fifth-year forward and the lack of cap space across the league.

The Warriors finished last season as one of the league’s hottest teams, going 23-8 after landing Jimmy Butler. However, their momentum suffered a jolt when Curry sustained a hamstring tear in Game 1 of the second-round playoff series against the Timberwolves. The star guard never returned, leading to the Warriors losing the series in five games.
