Nicolas Cage has had an unexpected disruption to his home life after a massive sinkhole forced him to leave his Malibu property. The actor recently revealed that he has an unusual living situation, but it hasn’t stopped him from making the most of family time. Cage offered a glimpse into how he’s handling the situation while making sure his daughter’s Halloween wasn’t disrupted.
Nicolas Cage Is A ‘Bit Homeless’ After A Sinkhole Destroyed His Home
A massive sinkhole opened in Nicolas Cage’s Malibu beachfront home in early September, but fortunately, no one was inside the house when it occurred. However, the actor has been displaced as the structure remains uninhabitable and has been red-tagged.
At the L.A. Comic Con on October 31, Cage addressed the sinkhole when asked about his Halloween plans. “I’m currently a little bit homeless,” the actor said, adding that something happened to his home and he was sleeping in hotels as a result. “I don’t have normal trick-or-treaters I would like to enjoy tonight,” Cage explained, as reported by Page Six. However, he shared his plans to go trick-or-treating with his daughter in Santa Monica.
Cage’s youngest child is his 4-year-old daughter, August, whom he shares with his wife, Riko Shibata. He also has two older sons from previous relationships.
The Actor Shared The Movie He Planned To Watch On Halloween
Cage further elaborated on his Halloween plans after he put his daughter to bed. “I am going to watch a movie where the director was actually nominated for Worst Director at the Razzies called ‘The Shining’,” he shared.
The actor seemed to disagree with the Razzies nod, saying, “He directed the hell out of that movie. I’m going to watch that tonight.”
Cage has repeatedly expressed his love for Kubrick over the years, often highlighting his appreciation for his movies, such as “2001: A Space Odyssey” and “A Clockwork Orange.”
Despite the ongoing issues with his sinkhole-damaged home, the actor didn’t let the situation dampen his Halloween spirit.
Nicolas Cage’s $10.5 Million Mansion Remains Unsuitable For Occupancy
On September 8, a massive sinkhole opened under the driveway of Cage’s beachfront mansion, which he reportedly purchased for $10.5 million in 2024. The hole, which expanded to 30 feet by 60 feet and was about 30 feet deep, ruptured primarily utility lines, per The New York Times.
Dozens of residents were forced to evacuate their homes, and several properties, including Cage’s, were red-tagged by inspectors due to structural instability and hazardous conditions. Coastal erosion also remains an ongoing threat to the foundations of nearby residences.
Engineering consultants said the sinkhole was triggered by a combination of factors, including coastal swells and unusually high tides from Hurricane Marie, heavy rainfall, and a seawall failure. Moreover, they noted it wasn’t the same as an inland sinkhole since they determined it was caused by the loss of subterranean support.
The Actor Has Filed Permits To Prevent Further Damage To His Home
Following the sinkhole disaster, Cage reportedly filed to secure a few permits that allowed him to have repair work done to his property, which includes removal of debris and the addition of sandbags to protect the home from strong waves and further erosion.
Residents remain completely locked out of the neighborhood, and repairs will reportedly be shouldered by the Sea Level Drive Homeowners Association. However, there have been delays because the contractor was terminated.
In a Malibu.fm report from early October, Malibu Building Chief Yolanda Bundy said at a city council meeting that a new contractor has been hired. “The contract has been signed. The contractor is a local contractor that knows the city, that understands the urgency on this matter.”
Nicolas Cage Has Celebrity Neighbors On Sea Level Drive

While Cage’s property was directly damaged by the sinkhole, his wasn’t the only celebrity home affected, as other high-profile residents also faced evacuation concerns.
Sea Level Drive is an exclusive enclave, and according to the New York Post, celebrities such as Pierce Brosnan, Danny DeVito, Valerie Bertinelli, Dustin Hoffman, Ray Romano, and Mindy Kaling have properties there.
The baseline repair was initially projected to take about five weeks, but ongoing challenges, including access restrictions and weather patterns, have complicated the process. As of now, there is no guaranteed timeline for when the repairs will be completed.
