    Seattle Marathon: Magnolia, a word

Re: “Seattle Marathon reroute a hit for runners, headache for new neighbors” (Dec. 1, Local News):

Dear Magnolia residents, welcome to Seattle. When I read about the new marathon route I was excited that it went through Magnolia. What a beautiful loop, and an opportunity to bring the kids to cheer the runners, see what was happening, maybe even run or walk that short loop yourself.

I don’t live in Magnolia now, although I am frequently there having grown up on the bluff and having family members who still live there. Magnolia is in my blood.

Mount Baker and Rainier Valley are inundated several days each year for Seafair. It literally impairs access to the entire community.

Husky games block traffic, Seahawks and Mariner games block every neighborhood having light rail. Yes, yes, I know you moved to Magnolia because it was remote and that’s the beauty. But seriously, this is one day a year. And not even a whole day at that! The route change was well publicized. Hopefully the city will learn from any mistakes it made on signage, etc.

You now have a whole year to prepare for this wonderful annual Seattle community event. Be ready next year to cheer on those brave enough to run.

    Susan Vaughan, Seattle
